Setup for Success: Tools for Teams
Update: At first, I called this post “tools for distributed teams”, but after an awesome conversation at Owner Summit and many conversations with CEOs of all shapes, sizes and types of organizations, I realized that doesn’t make sense. Tools are super important for distributed teams, but at some level we’re all distributed (i.e. working with clients). So, here’s a more complete list of tools– tools for all! It’ll grow and evolve with time as technology does.
First, why do tools matter? Why does this list matter?
Besides the obvious answer of productivity and efficiency:
If you hire great people, they’re going to be relentlessly resourceful and talented in an ecosystem competing for talent. You have to give them the best possible tools to do the best possible job. You have to continuously ask yourself, “How do I make people more successful?” And, “What can I give my team to make them more valuable?”
You also have to adopt tools that enable people to make decisions at the same level you would. That’s scale and leverage.
How might a list like this be helpful?
Well, what spreadsheet do you have today that you wish was an app? Some (probably many) of the tools below can automate that spreadsheet. (h/t to Carl Smith for the great question)
Today, you don’t have to look far to find cloud-based tools to organize and collaborate online. The tough part is breaking through all of the noise to find the right tools. Setup and adoption takes time, dedication and energy, so when you choose tools for your team, it’s important to invest time upfront to pick right.
Here’s a living list of tools that many companies use and love– from Asana to Zoom.
Communication, Collaboration & Project Management
Creative & Development
Accounting & CRM
More tools and categorization to come– it’s a living list!
